Modern vans are very different beasts to the boxes-on-wheels of the past. Diesel engine technology has advanced dramatically with the adoption of common rail injection and turbocharging and the latest Electronic Stability Systems fitted to just about everything as standard are a remarkably efficient contribution to safety. Refinement, ride and handling have reached levels that would have been unheard of even ten years ago and as for in-cab comfort, it’s hard to tell if its a car or a van in some cases. All of this has been achieved while keeping payloads high and improving fuel consumption, thanks to the super-efficient modern diesels. Van drivers have never had it so good.
When deciding on the winners VansA2Z
have taken every aspect of a light commercial vehicle into account. This includes fuel consumption, driveability — including such mundane, but important things as gearchange quality — load-carrying ability, load area access and of course price; front-end as well as residual.
Each of the main categories has a winner and a highly commended, and it’s one of the former that takes the overall VansA2Z Van of the Year 2011 accolade.
